Traffic Technician I (Signals, Streetlights, and Signs)

Position Summary

This position is responsible for performing technical maintenance and labor on the City's traffic signal, street lighting and traffic sign infrastructure. Work is performed under direct supervision and is frequently reviewed by visual inspection of completed tasks.

Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs supervised preventive maintenance, follows scheduled maintenance activities, responds to emergency maintenance situations and follows directives and work orders from supervisors.
  • Assists with signal timing adjustments and installation of controllers and traffic signal equipment.
  • Assembles, repairs and installs traffic signals, streetlight poles, luminaries and cabinets.
  • Assists with installation and maintenance of fiber optic systems and communication systems (including wireless and closed-loop components) under supervision.
  • Assists with the fabrication, installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signs and pavement markings as needed.
  • Collects traffic data in the field including manual turning movement counts, 24-hour machine counts, speed counts, classification counts, etc.
  • Maintains accurate time and production records for activities by utilizing asset management software.
  • Assists with the maintenance of inventory systems for traffic signals, streetlights and signs.
  • Assist with the City’s special events as necessary.
  • Performs “walk-around inspections” on equipment prior to operation, replenishes fluid levels and completes required log. Operates all machinery in a safe and judicious manner according to the manufacturer's operation manual. Cleans and performs routine maintenance and minor repairs to assigned equipment as needed. Reports malfunctioning equipment to supervisor.
  • Subject to overtime and callbacks related to traffic signals, streetlights, weather and other emergencies including weekends, before and after hours and holidays.
  • Drives City and/or personal vehicle to perform essential functions of position.

Additional Examples of Work Performed

  • Fieldwork may involve installing signs, pounding poles, repairing signals and streetlight equipment and troubleshooting problems with electronic/electrical equipment.
  • Operates and maintains various types of equipment as well as required tools (hand, power and pneumatic).
  • Utilizes proper electrical test equipment and operates various types of equipment and tools as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Compliance with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • One year of construction, electrical or traffic systems experience.
  • Possess a valid Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) with required air brake endorsement or ability to obtain within six months.
  • Clean driving record.
  • Level I IMSA certification for each: “Traffic Signal Technician,” “Roadway Lighting Technician” and “Signs and Pavement Markings Technician” or ability to obtain within 18 months of employment.
  • Possession of NIMS level ICS100 and ICS700 trainings or ability to obtain in one year.
  • Possession of Work Zone Safety Certification including flagging within one year of hire.

Desired:

  • One year of traffic systems experience; OR completion of an Associate of Science degree (or equivalent) in electronics. Technical electronics training may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Experience with microprocessor and electronic traffic signal system controller equipment.
  • Knowledge of computer interface as related to traffic systems software.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, asset management tracking systems, ESRI products and related computerized traffic programs.
  • Knowledge of Flexi Sign Plus or other sign production software programs.
  • Knowledge of Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

Compensation and Benefits
Hiring range is from $46,148 to $53,498 annually dependent on qualifications and directly related experience. The City of Lenexa offers a comprehensive benefits package including:

  • Clothing allowance (jeans, shirts, jackets) - $400 annually
