Recreation Supervisor - Nature

Position Summary

This position involves work in planning, coordinating, promoting, directing and evaluating programs, activities and events for the Parks & Recreation Department. The area of emphasis is nature programs including management of the Lenexa Farmers Market.

Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities

  • Designs and implements recreation programs, activities and events suited to the needs of participants and potential participants. Consults with individuals and groups that impact the recreation programs, activities and events to determine their interests, needs and desires.
  • Hires, trains, assigns duties, supervises and evaluates part-time and variable employees as well as volunteers involved in a variety of related recreation and maintenance activities.
  • Coordinates and/or teaches a variety of recreational programs and activities related to nature as assigned.
  • Assists in the preparation of promotional materials, program brochures, manuals and rules and regulations used by the department.
  • Recruit, Onboard, and support farmers market vendors including managing payments and completing site visits.
  • Assists in the planning and execution of City-sponsored special events such as Playground Passport, Fishing Derby, Farm-to-Table Dinner, etc.
  • Manages low-cost, debit program (SNAP) and reconciles transactions for the Farmer’s Market.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports, including daily cash reports, program attendance reports, quarterly class reports and statistical reports from special events.
  • Manages budget as well as prepares invoices and codes payments correctly.
  • Monitors public activity within parks and recreation facilities and notifies proper authorities in cases of illegal activity, damage to property or facilities in need of repair.
  • Drives City and/or personal vehicles to perform essential functions of position.

  • Meets and works with advisory boards and commissions that impact the division and the department.
  • Participates in the divisional budget preparation process.
  • Acts as a replacement during other departmental member’s absences.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Compliance with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

Minimum: Associate degree in parks and recreation, leisure services or related field; three years of increasingly responsible experience supervising recreation programs, activities and events; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and satisfactory credit history. Must complete required NIMS IS-100 and IS-700 trainings within three months of employment.

Desired: Bachelor’s degree in parks and recreation, leisure services or related field; Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) certification.

Environment and Physical Factors

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. This position performs medium physical work, requiring the ability to occasionally lift and move supplies and materials up to 30-40 lbs. related to recreation programs, activities and events and visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned. Long hours of standing with limited breaks will be encountered during special events.

Compensation and Benefits
Hiring range starts at $54,303 to $62,952 dependent on qualifications and directly related experience. The City of Lenexa offers a comprehensive benefits package including:
