Position Summary

This position is responsible for day-to-day instruction and operation of aquatic lessons, including the swim lesson program at the Lenexa Rec Center. This includes instructing, coordinating activities, evaluating progress, and handling delegated administrative duties. This position maintains and improves aquatic programs, while creating and maintaining public awareness on water safety, and resolving participant and patron issues.

Key Responsibilities

• Monitors, instructs, and evaluates participants for safety and development. Organizes, leads, and handles up to 10 children and/or participants in the water at one time. Models all strokes, skills, and other techniques in and out of the water. Develops and implements lesson plans effectively.

• Always exhibits a high degree of customer service skills and positive attitude with staff and customers. Creates and maintains good public relations.
• Observes and aides in communication and enforcement of policies and procedures to staff and the public to promote safety.
• Resolves sensitive, significant, and controversial issues from personnel and patrons, while promoting friendly and courteous attitudes. Works with participants for quality assurance and needs assessment.
• Completes progress reports, certificates, and daily attendance accurately and on time.
• Ensures safe environment for staff and patrons. Initiates and performs the Emergency Action Plan, including all procedures and skills.
• Attends required trainings.
• Complies with, and promotes, safety and sanitary regulations according to federal, state, county, local and organizational requirements. Maintains pool cleanliness. Maintain equipment and supplies in proper working order, in an orderly, clean manner.

• Complies with all City ordinances and policies.
• Assists other employees and performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.
• Performs minor maintenance on equipment or notifies maintenance personnel of emergencies and equipment failures.
• Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering the phone and questions, running errands, making arrangements for rental and aquatic use, helping set up for practices, home meets, etc.
• Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum: American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR and First Aid/AED certifications or ability to obtain prior to employment date. Minimum age of 14.

Desired: Water Safety Instructor, Lifeguard, and Blood Borne Pathogens certifications.

Starting rate of pay is $16.00 per hour dependent on qualifications and directly related years of experience. Offers of employment are conditional upon successful completion of a physical, drug screen and background check.
