Summer Lifeguard (Outdoor)

Outdoor swimming pools summer season:

Weekend trainings in May

Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend

Public Pool Hours: Noon to 7:30PM seven days a week.

Pool Program Hours: Ad Astra: 5:30AM – Noon (Monday – Saturday)

Flat Rock Creek: 9:00AM – Noon (Monday – Friday)

Sar-Ko- Par: 6:30AM – Noon (Monday – Saturday)

Pool staff are expected to open and close the pools for programs and daily operational duties. Lifeguards are needed for the entire pool season and hours of operation as noted above.

Position Summary

Lifeguards are responsible for the overall daily operation of the City’s swimming pools. The Lifeguard is responsible for the supervision of pool patrons, maintaining training standards, daily pool maintenance and operational activities, and record keeping. Duties also include enforcing aquatic facility rules and policies, guarding and attending to swimmers, and performing first aid and emergency procedures as required.

Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities

  • Monitors, attends to, and guards pool patrons.
  • Displays the knowledge and ability to initiate and perform the Emergency Action Plan, including all procedures and skills. Performs all lifeguard skills, including first aid, CPR, emergency and safety procedures, and rescue maneuvers. Operates all applicable equipment.
  • Attends required in-service trainings per month, maintains weekly swimming, and pre-season training and daily training requirements.
  • Always exhibits a high degree of customer service skills and positive attitude with staff and customers and creates and maintains good public relations. Observes and aides in communication and enforcement of policies and procedures to staff and the public to promote safety. Resolves sensitive, significant and controversial issues from personnel and patrons, while promoting friendly and courteous attitudes.
  • Assists and performs daily setup and cleaning of facility, daily activities and programs, events and operations, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Complies with, and promotes, safety and sanitary regulations according to federal, state, county, local and organizational requirements. Makes routine inspections of facilities to determine functionality and safety, including restrooms, pool deck, and inside and outside the pool perimeter, and reports unsatisfactory conditions. Maintains pool cleanliness. Performs daily cleaning of facility and grounds.
  • Completes required reports and records including incidents, first aid and rescues, payroll, daily logs, accurately and on time as required and assigned.

Additional Examples of Work Performed

  • Comply with all City ordinances and policies.
  • Assists other employees and perform other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.
  • May work as an on-duty head lifeguard and/or admissions or concessions staff as needed or required.
  • Performs minor maintenance on equipment or notifies maintenance personnel of emergencies and equipment failures.
  • Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering the phone and questions, making arrangements for rentals and aquatic use, helping set up for classes, events, etc.
  • Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be 15 years of age.
  • Candidates must successfully complete the following:
    • Swim 300 yards continuously using these strokes in the following order: 100 yards of front crawl (using rhythmic breathing); 100 yards of breaststroke; and 100 yards of either front crawl, breaststroke, or a mixture of both.
    • Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke; surface dive to a depth of 13 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object within the allotted time.
    • Tread water for 2 minutes in deep water without the use of arms and hands for stability.
  • Possess good customer service skills and emergency response.
  • Must have current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training with the Waterpark module, CPR, and First Aid/AED certifications required, or ability to obtain prior to employment date. The City of Lenexa does offer the Lifeguard Training classes to candidates.
  • Must be able to work a variety of shifts including early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays.

Rate of pay: Starting rate of pay is $15.50 per hour. City residency not required.

Offers of employment are conditional upon successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen and a background check is required if age 18 or older..
